Difference between spammy SEO methods and ethical SEO methods

If you use spammy SEO methods, you will quickly get high rankings on search engines. Unfortunately, Google will completely remove your website from the search results as soon as they find out that you use these methods.

If you use ethical SEO methods, it will take longer until you get high search engine rankings. However, your rankings will grow steadily and you’ll get a much better performance in the long run.

Do not use spammy SEO methods to increase your rankings on Google. It will backfire on you.

If you want to get high rankings on Google, you should make sure that your web pages can easily be parsed by Google’s robot. You must make sure that your web pages have been optimized for the right keywords and that enough other websites link to your site.

Another spam trick to get higher rankings in Google’s local results

Yesterday we discussed this crazy spam technique executed by the Chinese! Today a spam trick which is easier to believe.

It seems to help if the address of a business is close to the city center or the main station. If a business gets a post box close to these locations and submits that address to Google Maps, it will be listed higher in the local results on Google. As the local results are usually displayed above the regular listings in Google, this could be a way to get many clicks.

The local search trick might work but it will probably be difficult for most webmasters to hire an army of Chinese bike couriers. In general, you shouldn’t use spam techniques at all. So far, Google has detected all spam methods sooner or later.

Websites with spam techniques are usually banned from Google’s index. You might get a small advantage for some time with some spam techniques but you’re risking all rankings of your website.

Crazy New Spam Trick

This spam trick is a little hard to believe, but some get higher rankings in Google’s regular results using this “technique”

It seems that some webmasters hire cheap Chinese workers to get higher rankings on Google. As strange as it sounds, these webmasters pay couriers on bikes to drive to various Internet cafes, search for their keywords and then click on the listing of the webmaster’s site.

Over time, the listings go up. Actually, Google does have a click tracker in the result URLs. Until now, it had been unclear for what purpose Google uses this tracker. If this story is true, Google might use the number of clicks that a listing gets to determine the ranking of a web page.

Four important rules: how to get a #1 ranking on Google

A number 1 ranking in Google’s search results for the right keyword can mean a lot of visitors and a lot of sales. That’s why so many people want to be on Google’s first result page.

Unfortunately, many people still don’t know what it takes to convince Google that your website is more relevant than the millions of other websites on the Internet. There are four simple rules that will help you to get your website on Google’s first result page:

Rule #1: Don’t try to fool Google

Google wants to return the most relevant web pages for a search query. They want to provide the best answer to a search query. If you try to get a high ranking for a keyword for which your web page isn’t really relevant then you won’t get good results. Actually, you might be accused of spamming. If your website consists just of ads and affiliate links then it will be extremely difficult to get good rankings.

Make sure that your web pages will answer the questions of people who search for your keyword. The better your web pages match the interest of the web searchers the better rankings you will get. It takes some time to create good content but it will pay off in the long run.

Rule #2: Your web pages must show Google that they are relevant

A website about used car parts cannot get high rankings for a keyword such as “brain surgery”. A high ranking for the keyword “used car parts” would be very beneficial to that site.

The problem is that Google must be able to find out that your web page is relevant for the keyword “used car parts”. For that reason, you have to optimize your web pages. Optimizing your web pages simply means that you make it easy for Google to find out what your website is about.

When Google visits your web pages, it will analyze the following elements of your web pages:

* The URL structure
* The title tag and the meta tags
* The body text
* Headline tags
* Image alt attributes
* Your site architecture and the internal linking structure of your site
* The outbound links
* Many other factors in the HTML code of your web pages

Each element can contain your keyword and show Google that your website is relevant for that keyword. This doesn’t mean that you can simply insert your keyword in these tags and that’s it.

You can also over-optimize a website and that can get your website banned from Google’s search results. It’s important that you optimize the right elements and that you insert your keywords in the right frequency.

Rule #3: Other websites must confirm that your web pages are relevant

In addition to optimized web page content, Google heavily relies on the links from other websites to your site. Basically, the other websites have to confirm that your website is relevant for a special keyword. The more websites link to your website, the more visible it will be to Google. The more other websites use a special keyword as the linked text in the links to your website, the more important is your website for that keyword.

A web page that has been optimized for the keyword “used cars” can also get high rankings for the keyword “pre-owned cars” if enough websites link with that text to the page.

It is also important that the other web pages are related your site. If a website that is about vintage cars links to your “used car parts” website then this will have a bigger effect on your search engine rankings than a link from a candy shop website. A link from a web page that only links to car related web pages is also more valuable than a link from a web page that links to all kind of pages. Getting the right links is crucial if you want to get on Google’s first result page.

Rule #4: Your website must have a clean history

The age of your domain and its history will also be considered by Google. A domain name that has been around for a long time will get high rankings more easily. However, if your domain name has been used by spammers before, you might still suffer from the ranking penalties that have been applied to the previous content.

If you follow the rules above and change your web pages accordingly, your website will get top rankings on Google. It cannot be done over night but it’s definitely something that can be done within a few weeks if you do the right things.

Being first in the search results is not always the right thing

The number one position on Google is something that most webmasters try to achive. Unfortunately, many webmasters don’t take the time to find the best keywords for optimization. This can lead to problems with pay per click and with organic search engine optimization.

Suppose you sell ovens on your website. Many webmasters think that it would be a good idea to optimize the website for keywords such as “oven” or “furnace”. It’s not and we’ll tell you why relying on the seemingly obvious keywords will cost you a lot of time and money.

You might lose money with every keyword

A new pay per click study shows that it is not profitable to have the first position for one to two words keywords. The most profitable positions in the paid results for short keywords were the fifth and the sixth position. Keywords that consisted of three-words were profitable when the website was listed in the second or third position.

Why do people lose money when they bid for the first position?

One or two-word keywords are very general. That means that many companies think that their websites are relevant to these keywords. Many companies bid on the keyword and the keyword becomes very expensive.

expensive keywordsIn addition, general keywords don’t attract targeted visitors. People who enter “oven” in a search engine might be looking for an oven manual, they might search for dutch oven recipes, for industrial ovens and many other different things.

They might not be interested in buying a new oven, even if you offer them on your website for really good prices. That means that the keywords are expensive and the visitors that you get through these short keywords are not targeted. For that reason, it is very difficult to get a positive return on investment for these short keywords.

Keywords that consist of three or more keywords are much more targeted and they have less competition. For example, it is much better to have high rankings for keywords such as “buy an oven” or “smith oven model xp356″ if you sell ovens. People who whose multiple word keywords are in the compare or buying phase. They are more likely to purchase goods or services than those using fewer words (source: Oneupweb Research).

In addition, fewer people bid on multiple word keywords. For that reason, it makes sense to focus on these words.

How does this apply to organic search engine results?

While you don’t have to pay for every click if your website is listed in the organic search results, it takes some time and work to get listed in the top 10 results.

The competition for general one or two-word keywords is much higher than the competition for specific keywords that will deliver targeted visitors to your website. If you want to have a good return on investment, you should concentrate on multiple word keywords. These keywords deliver much better visitors and it is easier to get high rankings for them.

You will lose a lot of time and money if you optimize your web pages for the wrong keywords.

How to write link texts that will increase your Google rankings

Good link texts can give your website a boost in Google’s search results. Unfortunately, many webmasters still don’t take advantage of the full potential of optimized link texts. This article explains how you can make the most out of your links.

What is a link text?

anchor linkThe link text is the link that is used to link to another web page. It is the text between the anchor tags. That’s why some people call link texts anchor texts.

Why are link texts important?

Google and other major search engines heavily rely on link texts to specify the position of web pages in the search results. If many websites link to a web page with the link text “mp3″ then Google thinks that the web page must be relevant to the keyword “mp3″. For that reason, the web page will get a ranking boost for that search term.

The more often a keyword appears in links to your website, the better your rankings for that keyword will be.

How to write good links

There are a few easy tips that will make your links more useful for both web surfers and search engines:

- Write your texts as if there were no links. Search engines like links that are in the normal text of your web page.
- Do not describe the mechanism behind the link but the purpose of the link
- Use clear and descriptive text for your links. The link text should be meaningful enough to make sense when read out of context.
- Avoid unpleasant surprises. If the link goes to a web page that starts a movie or downloads a file then you should mention this in the link

Many website visitors do not read the text on a web page but scan the highlighted keywords. For that reason, your link texts should be easy to understand even if people haven’t read the surrounding text.

Use keywords in your link texts whenever possible. The more often a keyword appears in a link to a special web page, the better are the chances that this web page will get high rankings on Google for that keyword.
