Are your AdWords results getting worse?

If you find that your pay per click prices are going sky high, while your conversions are going down, you should check your AdWords strategy. In addition to the keywords that you choose for your campaign, your landing pages are a very important factor. The landing pages that you use with your pay per click ads greatly influence both your conversions and pay per click prices.

The following two strategies are often a quick fix for underperforming AdWords campaigns:

1. Optimize your landing pages for your visitors

Attracting customers to your website through Google AdWords is one thing. It is a completely different thing to persuade visitors to your website to fulfill the goal of your landing page, e.g. to buy your product.

Google AdWords cost you money as soon as a potential customer clicks on your AdWords ad. It makes no difference whether your destination URL is up or not, or whether the potential customer leaves your website prematurely because it loads too slowly.

If you want conversions, your landing page must have a clearly defined goal. It must guide the visitor and it must contain a clear call to action. Your website visitors must be able to see within seconds what’s in for them when they visit your website.

2. Optimize your landing pages for Google’s spider

Google uses the Quality Score to determine the position and the cost of an ad. If possible, include the text of the AdWords ad and the most important keywords on your landing page.

It often helps to optimize the landing page for the keywords with the highest click through rate (CTR). A web page that can get high rankings in the organic search results will also get a high Quality Score for that keyword.

Google’s Quality Score also includes other factors. Actually, Google uses four different Quality Scores to determine when and how ads are displayed.

Using tightly themed ad groups with related landing pages is the first step to get better results with Google AdWords.

ValueClick to pay 2.9 million fine!

The FTC (Federal Trade Commision) investigated ValueClick the last couple of months. According to the FTC, Valueclick subsidiary Hi-Speed Media used various deceptive banners, pop-ups and emails to drive visitors to websites. The ads claimed to the visitors that they would get free gifts, like laptops, ipods, gift cards etc. This was not the case and the visitors first had to do a lot of things before they maybe got a chance to win one of these “free” gifts.

The FTC charged that ValueClick’s use of deceptively labeled e-mail offering free gifts and its failure to disclose that consumers must expend substantial sums of money to obtain the promised “free” merchandise violates the CAN-SPAM Act and the FTC Act.

This fine is not the only bad thing happening to ValueClick lately. eBay, one of their major clients decided to do the marketing theirselves now and are not going to use VC anymore to do it for them!

When and how to promote a blog!

AOL buys Bebo

Internet giant AOL is buying Bebo for 850 million dollar. Bebo has around 40 million users and is very popular in the United Kingdom and New Sealand. Bebo ranks as the UK’s most engaging social network with users spending an average of 33 minutes on the site per usage day. With 40 million users Bebo is way smaller then Facebook and MySpace, but still a pretty good purchase. AOL also owns AIM & ICQ, two very popular IM services.

As part of its international growth plans, AOL has launched 17 international web sites over the last year and has plans to expand to 30 countries outside the United States by the end of 2008. In addition, AOL teamed up with HP last September to include localized versions of the AOL.com portal and other AOL services as the default setting on HP computers shipped in the United States and around the world.

Bebo, which has announced plans to launch in five countries this year, will be featured prominently in AOL’s international expansion efforts after the deal is closed.
